Based on Iain Reid’s novel, Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking Of Ending Things will definitely have you scratching your head wondering what in the world is happening. It is a wonderful movie in retrospect, but I do not think this is something that would appeal to the masses.
Actors: Jesse Plemmons (Jake), Jessie Buckley (Lucy), Toni Collette (Jake’s mom), David Thewlis (Jake’s dad)
Director: Charlie Kaufman
A young woman (Lucy) goes on a trip with her boyfriend (Jake) to visit his parents. While there, confusing events make her question everything she knows.
The movie is character-driven and very dialogue-heavy. Time and continuity do not seem to exist in the film and this leaves the audience confused for the most part. Some dialogues seem so meaningless that they may seem boring. However, all these details play a role in the bigger picture. Everything points to the story.
Kaufman leaves a lot of clues for us to pick up to understand the storyline but it requires us to watch very attentively to follow. If you watch the entire movie, you may still not understand it entirely (I won’t lie to seem more intelligent!) HOWEVER, if you carefully reflect on what you watched, you will realise what a brilliant movie it is.
With some excellent performances by all the actors, this movie is a must-watch for Kaufman fans and people who are ready to invest a little time understanding a brilliant story.
