Of late, the Indian film industry had taken a huge blow owing to the nationwide lockdown. Many members of the film fraternity were rendered unemployed. To keep their audience entertained and to ensure that the members of the industry could continue earning, the film industry had to get creative. Hence, there was a sudden flurry of made-at-home web series and short films.

Made during the lockdown and shot on an iPhone and various web cameras, the Fahadh Faasil starrer C U Soon premiered on Amazon Prime today. The movie’s premise is not a new one. However, the movie is an all-round package with excellent performances and a new method of storytelling.

Review:

C U Soon is a fast-paced movie. The story is conveyed almost entirely on phone or computer screens. Though this screen-based format of storytelling is an experimental one, the excellent screenplay, direction and editing make the movie interesting. Intense emotions are conveyed without turning the movie into a melodrama.

The direction by Mahesh Narayanan deserves a special mention. Being a screen-based narrative, the flow of the movie could have been swayed easily by concentrating on the technical aspects. Fortunately, the filmmaker has kept the focus on the story and other details minimal.

The main actors in the film, Fahadh Faasil, Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran, deliver phenomenal performances. Fahadh as the angry, impatient young man is brilliant. As usual, his eyes do the talking and he emotes with ease even in the scenes without dialogues.

Roshan Mathew is extremely credible as the man who wears his heart on his sleeve and gets into trouble for it. He depicts Jimmy’s love, panic and despair brilliantly. His screen presence and charm shine through even when his face is only partly visible on one part of the main screen.

Darshana Rajendran as Anu has done a great job too. She depicts her character’s coyness and sincerity perfectly. The supporting cast is wisely chosen and their performances enhance the quality of the film.

The Verdict:

C U Soon is an exciting and interesting thriller. It is fast-paced, gripping and very well executed. It will have you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing till the very end. The final reveal will surely leave you satisfied with the whole viewing experience. This is definitely a must-watch.
